Every mainland-to-Hobart consignment routes through Melbourne and crosses Bass Strait. Sea freight travels via the Spirit of Tasmania RoRo service into Devonport or via Toll and SeaRoad sailings into the Port of Burnie, then heads south on the Midland Highway through Launceston. For priority consignments, direct air freight into Hobart airport at Cambridge is the faster option.

Hobart metro pickup and delivery covers Moonah, Derwent Park, Glenorchy, Cambridge (airport), Kingston, Sorell and Huonville. Regional Tasmanian on-forwarding reaches Launceston, Devonport, Burnie, Ulverstone, Smithton, George Town, Queenstown and Strahan — the Midland Highway spine runs roughly four hours end to end.

TasRail handles intermodal rail between the Brighton terminal north of Hobart, the Port of Burnie and Bell Bay, moving palletised and bulk freight for Tasmanian manufacturers and mining-support shippers. Interstate rail doesn't cross Bass Strait, so rail sits inside Tasmania only — interstate legs still run Melbourne-based road or sea linehaul before or after the rail leg.

Metro same-day and next-day across Hobart and South Tasmania. Hobart-Melbourne general freight 5-6 business days via Bass Strait or 3-4 days express. Bass Strait sailings can be interrupted by weather or mechanical holds on the Spirit of Tasmania and Toll/SeaRoad sea services. QFM monitors the carrier schedules and reschedules to the next available sailing. For urgent loads, air freight via Hobart Airport is the only real alternative and comes at a premium. Flag time-critical loads before dispatch so we can build a contingency plan up front.
